John Marshall Exhibit at the Old Jail
Opens to public on Friday, September 25 at 11:00 am
John Marshall was born in Fauquier County in 1755 and went on to serve as the fourth Chief Justice of the United States, shaping American constitutional law and the role of the Supreme Court for generations to come.
The exhibit features artifacts and stories that offer a closer look at Marshall’s life, family, and connection to Fauquier County. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore his remarkable journey from his Fauquier County roots to becoming one of the nation’s most important legal figures.
Celebrate Halloween with a ghost hunt inside the historic Old Jail as we commemorate the 60th anniversary of its final prisoner. Explore the jail after dark and experience an evening of history and mystery.

The original four-cell jail was built in 1808. Less than twenty years later in 1823, a larger stone jail was built to the rear of the original structure, which was converted into a house for the jailor. The larger jail includes an exercise yard also used as a hanging yard until 1896. The jail was used until October of 1966 when the last prisoner left.
